Critical Reflection: Ethical Conduct & Professional Accountability
Context:
During my placement at Gilmour Space Technologies task of developing the Chainmail Tree Chart presented a significant experience that highlighted the importance of ethical conduct and professional accountability in the ICT industry.
Experience:
As part of the WIL Placement, I was tasked with creating the Component Tree Chart, a critical visualization tool with dynamic data. This data was crucial for the development of certain features in the Chainmail tree chart project. However, it raised concerns about privacy, data security, and ethical conduct.
How I Dealt with the Situation:
I approached this situation with a strong commitment to ethical conduct and professional accountability. Here's how I handled it:
- Dummy Data Usage: During the prototyping phase, I ensured that any dummy data used was entirely fictional and not linked to any real-world data or individuals. This safeguarded against any inadvertent misuse of sensitive information.
- Live Data Transition: When transitioning to live data from the database, I worked closely with the data management team to ensure that all data handling and integration followed best practices for security and privacy. This involved encrypting sensitive information, implementing access controls, and adhering to the organization's data handling policies.
- Data Minimization: I implemented a data minimization approach, only collecting and using the data necessary for the specific task. Unnecessary data was not stored or processed.
What I Did Well:
I believe I handled this situation well in terms of:
- Ethical Considerations: The use of dummy data and the subsequent transition to live data raised ethical considerations related to data privacy, integrity, and security. Handling sensitive data irresponsibly could have severe professional and ethical implications.
- Transparency: Open communication and obtaining consent from the individuals involved created a transparent and accountable environment.
- Data Security: Implementing robust data security measures helped safeguard personal information. I conducted regular audits to ensure that data was being used responsibly and that there were no breaches of privacy or data misuse.
What Could Have Been Handled Better:
Reflecting on this experience, I acknowledge that there are areas where I could have handled it better:
- Early Ethical Consideration: It would have been beneficial to engage in discussions regarding data ethics and security at the project's outset. By involving relevant stakeholders from the beginning, ethical considerations could have been integrated more seamlessly into the development process.
- Documentation: While I took steps to ensure data security and privacy, documenting these processes comprehensively would have been valuable. This documentation could serve as a reference point for future projects and audits, demonstrating a commitment to ethical conduct.
- Data Governance: I could have put in place a more structured data governance framework from the beginning to ensure better management of data throughout the project.
What I Learned:
This experience reinforced the importance of ethical conduct and professional accountability in the ICT industry. It highlighted that responsible data handling should be an integral part of every project. I also learned the significance of seeking continuous improvement in ethical decision-making and data management.
The experience gained during the development of the Chainmail Tree Chart has deepened my awareness of the ethical responsibilities associated with handling data in the ICT industry. In my future career, I am committed to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct, particularly concerning data privacy, security, and integrity. I will actively seek opportunities to engage in discussions and training related to emerging ethical dilemmas in technology. By fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability, I aim to contribute positively to the ethical landscape of the ICT industry.
